Tropicaleo

In our quest to find all the dog friendly restaurants, we had to try out Tropicaleo. Dogs are allowed outside on the patios. They have a front patio and a back patio that they set up for events.

Tropicaleo is relatively new to the Birmingham area, opening in November 2017. It started out as a pop up restaurant, specializing in plantains, setting up shop in different breweries and at events around Birmingham. Tropicaleo has a great variety in their menu with plenty of options for vegetarian, paleo, and gluten free diets.

Tropicaleo is an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant permanently located next to Cahaba Brewery. It serves up fresh, delicious Puerto Rican cuisine. There is even a back patio door for easier access to and from Cahaba so you can grab food to take back to the brewery as well.

Phil, Kermit, and I first tried Tropicalo plantains when it was “popped up” last summer. The owners were so friendly and eager to share their food. They even gave Kermit some plantains-he loved them. We went back recently for lunch and were not disappointed.

We started with the fried plantain chips. At only $4 we got a lot more than we expected. They were salty, crispy, and delicious. The plantains came with a dipping sauce that was tangy and a bit spicy,  and added to the salty plantains. We had just taken Kermit on a hike so everyone was starving and this was the perfect snack before our meals came. Kermit got to sample a few of the less salty plantains-four paws up.

Phil got a margarita that was so fresh! Perfectly sweet and salty, with that zingy lime flavor.  It was so perfect for such a hot summer day.

Our food came out pretty quickly. Phil and I have pretty different food preferences. He’s a huge meat eater, where I’m almost a full blown vegetarian (I’ll do chicken or turkey sometimes) so it was nice to have one place with such great options for both of us.

Phil got the Carne Frita which is fried pork and tostones (fried plantains). The dipping sauce was the same sauce that came with our plantain chips and also went perfectly with the pork and tostones. According to Phil it was “crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside”

I got The Pretender, a “chicken” sandwich with a vegan patty, pineapple slaw, spinach, and avocado. It was filling and delicious. The slaw was fresh and I loved the “chicken” patty.

If you’re looking for a fun, casual place to grab a quick bite with your pup, definitely check out Tropicaleo. I love that Kermit can come with us, and I also love the option of grabbing food to go to take to Cahaba next door. Tropicaleo is another great example of how Birmingham is growing and we’re so excited that it is close to our neighborhood!
